Town of Annascaul

Town of AnnascaulAt the foot of the mountain range along the Dingle Peninsula lies the Annascaul village. The South Pole Inn, once owned by Thomas Crean, the Antarctic explorer, situates in this village. This Inn is featured in a Guinness advertisement depicting Thomas Crean reminiscing about a pint of the black stuff. Another fascination of walkers is the Annascaul village and the mountain walks in the area are spectacular, especially over the Beenoskee mountain

Antiquities

Carrigafoyle Castle The dolmens of Co. Kerry (Self Catering, Kerry, Ireland) number, according to Borlase, twenty-two. Two in the townland of Gortna-gulla may be mentioned, as they have been examined and planned in recent years. Both are wedge-shaped structures and belong to a type common in the South of Ireland.

History of Kerry

Kerry Blue SkyTralee , the county town, is situated at the shallow head of a bay far to the westward. The small stream on which it stands has been widened and deepened to allow of the passage of coasting craft to the town, but larger vessels berth at Fenit, a few miles westward. Killorglin is an important marketing centre. Dingle , the most westerly town in Europe, lies in a sheltered bay near the extremity of the mountainous Dingle Peninsula. Killarney is inland, near the beautiful lakes of the same name, with wild mountains to the west and south and low, boggy uplands to the north. Kenmare is beautifully situated at the head of the noble sea-inlet known as Kenmare river : steamers berth a short distance below the town. Castleisland and Listowel lie in the less picturesque country to the north. The famous Lakes of Killarney lie Lislaughtin Abbeyat the eastern end of Macgillicuddys Reeks, the loftiest mountain range in Ireland. They consist of a tolerably large sheet of water, the Lower Lake or Lough Leane, the small and scarcely distinct Muckross Lake, and another small and very irregular sheet of water, the Upper Lake; the last lies among high hills, and is connected with the others by a broad slow stream, the Long Reach. Different agencies have been at work in the production of these lakes

Town of Dingle

shoreline Dingle is a small town. It lies among the hills of the Dingle Peninsula on the triangular inlet of Dingle Harbour. Dingle is the most westerly and beautiful town in Europe where many visitors arrive each year to experience the culture and craic in this town. Dingle has barely half-a-dozen streets and 1,500 denizens - yet it is considered to be the fun capital of the western world. Other towns and cities may rival it for eating and drinking, but which of those can boast as well the music, the banter, the sea, the sand, the scenery, a certain dolphin, and the easy warmth of the welcome. Thousands of pilgrims visit this place, the hostels, guesthouses, campsites, pubs, restaurants, and shops overflowing. The mission of the visitors seems to learn from the natives how to enjoy themselves. Most or all of them are successful - the local strain of craic is highly infectious. But Dingle is more than mere merrymaking. Pleasures at Quieter include a number of interesting walks, a great many historical remains, particularly ogham stones, and the gentle call of the ambient hills. Dingle is not devoid of gravitas either. This was and still is a serious market town, built upon fishing and farming. And the banks, offices, and emporia on Main Street still lend an air of stability. As in other parts of Ireland, field sports, especially Gaelic football, are a perennial passion here. Soccer too is arduously followed. The Dingle Races held in August are a manifestation of Kerry’s love affair with the horse. And there is, of course, an annual regatta
